ISAE-Supaero x Viraj - Design of a water recovery system for next-generation steam injected turboprops Internship
Viraj is a start-up based in Toulouse developing a new generation of turboprop engines using steam injection, which enables significant gains in fuel efficiency and reductions in NOx emissions [1]. To implement steam injection in aeronautical applications (where water is not readily available), the water vapor present in the exhaust gas must first be condensed and then separated from the gas phase.
While water recovery systems exist for ground-based applications [2], they have not been designed specifically for aeronautical use, which requires the system to be compact, lightweight, highly efficient, durable, with low pressure losses, and able to integrate well within a complex flow path.
Positioned between innovation and research, the proposed work aims to develop a Water Recovery System (WRS) featuring minimal pressure losses, high water recovery efficiency, and low structural weight. The work will involve bibliographic research, 0D modeling, design iterations including CFD simulations using Ansys Fluent, as well as prototyping and experimental testing in collaboration with Viraj’s engineering team.
The project will be co-supervised and co-hosted by ISAE-SUPAERO and Viraj Aero (for integration and testing work).
We are looking for an enthusiastic engineer with an MSc degree in Fluid Mechanics, Energetics, or a closely related discipline, and experience in computational fluid dynamics. Excellent organizational skills, proactivity, and the ability to evolve in both academic and start-up environments will be strong assets. Experience in testing and prototyping methods is a plus.
