Preliminary Design & Intellectual Property Engineer

CDI
Toulouse
Start date :
May 30, 2026

As a preliminary design engineer, you will hold a unique polyvalent and dual role: 60 % of your time will be dedicated to advanced future design studies and 40 % to managing the company’s intellectual property. Extremely versatile, you will work across different scales, from light aviation (leveraging lessons learned from the current project and flight tests) to future regional aviation and turbofan applications, with a system-level view covering architecture and control. You will join the team at a critical stage: building a full-scale demonstrator with flight testing. You will work closely with the CTO and the entire engineeringteam.

Key responsibilities:

  • Lead preliminary design studies on new propulsive architectures at different scales (light aviation, regional, turbofan): 0D/1D cycle modeling, parametric analyses, preliminary sizing and performance evaluations
  • Ensure system-level view and technical consistency of preliminary designs:
    • Build digital mock-ups (DMU/CAD) and drive sub-system integration consistency across the program.
      • Leverage lessons learned from the current light aviation project and flight tests to feed larger-scale architecture studies.
      • Contribute to control architecture definition and aircraft modification implications related to propulsion system integration
    • Drive the company’s intellectual property strategy: identify and source innovativesolutions across all teams that deserve patent protection, build and valorize the IP portfolio, and serve as the primary point of contact with IP law firms for patent filing and prosecution
  • Write technical documents (preliminary design notes, architecture reports, system specifications) and draft patent applications in collaboration with inventors (you included) and specialized IP firms

Required profile:

  • Graduate of a top engineering school or holder of a Master’s degree in energy engineering, propulsion, fluid mechanics or mechanical engineering.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in turbomachinery design / preliminary design in a demanding environment: aerospace, space or energy.
  • Experience in patent drafting or IP management is highly desirable.

Required skills and qualities:

  • Strong knowledge of turbomachinery and thermodynamic cycles: 0D/1D modeling, performance, system architecture and control.
  • Proven technical versatility: ability to move between modeling, CAD/DMU, system integration and aircraft modifications.
  • Strong IP awareness: ideally with experience in invention identification, patent drafting and working with IP lawfirms.
  • Ability to engage with all engineering teams to source innovations and rally around the IP strategy.
  • Rigor, analytical mindset and strong organizational skills
  • Ability to work in a team and collaborate with diverse profiles
  • Knowledge of / sensitivity to aerospace requirements and standards
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in both French and English.
